Poem

Gbanjo Market.

8

Blazing nuzzles.
Fierce faces.
Leap from moving vehicles
Into empty compounds.
Where chairs and tables
Stare in fear
Then in derision.
As THEY move from class to class
In search of enemies.
Who are long gone
With twenty five dozen students.

Not in a trailer.
But on foot.
Across the village.
Before onlookers.
Through busy farm paths.
Under the eyes of the sun.
And the law.
Into the bossom of the forest.

Then HE comes.
The Chipped Security Officer in a camouflage.
With more nuzzles and fierce faces
To pass plates of commiseration
And commence the second act.

Negotiations?
Ransom money?
Or heroic rescues?
Only the night owl knows.
And it never squeals.

Let’s just celebrate.
The students are back
For lunch at government house.
In colourful hijabs and pants
Before a glitz of cameras.

Curtains are drawn.
A day’s job is done.
Business is good
In gbanjo market.
Tomorrow is another day.
